Trophies As Rewards Of Success

Trophy was actually derived from a Greek word. “Tropaion” came from the verb “trope,” meaning “to rout.” Back in ancient times in Greece, people used to produce trophies on the battlegrounds of victorious battles. Their bases were carved with the details of the battle, along with a dedication to the god that they believed assisted them win the battle. To destroy these tributes to the gods, then, was considered a blasphemy.
In ancient Rome, trophies were extremely large and were frequently placed on pillars and arches. Rather than being an accolade to the victors and the gods on the battlefield, the Romans preferred them made in Rome.
No one knew a great deal about its history during the Middle Ages. But it is thought that they were used as accolades for sporting events in the late 1600s. Silver chalices, as well as two-handled sterling cups, were the usual shapes used during that period.
Probably the supreme representation of triumph is a trophy. The usual setting is the bigger the trophy, the highest the achievement. From the grandest of competitions, such as major sports events, to the smallest of matches, like a local elementary school’s Spelling Bee contest, trophies are everywhere.
Although cups and chalices are still predominant in this day and age, trophies now come in assorted types and sizes. More and more shapes are now being made, depending on the event, including stars, human and animal shapes, and abstract designs.
Also, materials used nowadays are a great deal less pricey than silver and gold. Steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic are not just practical, they can also be mass produced.
Aside from sports, trophies are also awarded in recognition of an individual or group accomplishment. Example is from the Hollywood major awards event The Academy Awards, where individual abilities (acting, directing, producing, etc.) and group efforts (film, cast, etc.) are acknowledged with a stylized human award.
A trophy represents victory and position, not just a prize for a specific accomplishment in sports, acting, discovery or other skills. Acquiring one doesn’t only mean being able to outdo your opponents in a game or being the recognized leader in your area of expertise. Being honored with a trophy means being part of the legacy that comes with it.
