I consider myself a pretty superstitious person. I do all the predictable things a superstitious person might do-I never walk under a ladder, I won’t let a black cat cross my path, and I positively believe that shattering a mirror will give me seven years bad luck. I also have my own preconceived notions of what will give me bad luck or what is a bad omen: I never step on cracks in the floor, I make sure all of my light dimmer switches are all the way up even when the light is off, and my closet door must stay closed at all times. I’ve become aware that when I don’t do these things something bad always inevitably happens. One night I slept with my light switches off, and my cat was gone by morning. Another time, I stepped on a crack on the sidewalk and I was let go from my job the next day. But then something happened that seemed to actually bring me good luck: wearing my bead bracelet with exactly three beads on it.

It happened at first by accident. I was given the bead bracelet as a gift, and I thought of it nothing more than a nice gesture from a friend. She had also included two beads on it: one of a wishbone, and one of a four-leaf clover, evidently both signifying luck. It looked great on my wrist and I liked the beads, so I kept it on for the day. Nothing particularly great happened for the next two days, but nothing bad happened, either.

On the third day I walked by a shop selling beads for these bead bracelets. I thought I could use one more, and I picked up a bead of an angel. I put it on, and I felt a change in the air. I left the shop feeling confident and hopeful that something great was coming my way. And it was-I was so involved in my thoughts that I stepped straight into traffic and was almost crushed by a delivery truck. While this may seem unlucky, the man who stepped out to check if I was ok was pretty much the man of my dreams-tall, blonde-haired, and totally the rugged type. We’ve been dating ever since. I instantly thought to the beads.

The night I was almost killed (but with a date the very next day) I decided to do some study on these beads and my bead bracelet. It turns out that in the pre-historic times, people made beads as an amulet to deter evil spirits. This cemented my idea that I was wearing lucky beads. However, I decided that to make absolutely sure, I needed to test this theory against all of my other superstitions.

It may sound crazy and risky since I did have that date the next day, but I needed to know if I was right. The night before I went around my house and switched down all of my dimmer switches, left my closet door open, stepped on the crack between the hardwood floor and my carpet, opened an umbrella in my house, and cracked a compact mirror I had. Then I forced myself into sleep. When I opened my eyes, there were no messages on my cell phone forewarning me of any doom, there was nothing out of place in my home to trip me up, and the cat was back. I knew I owed at all to my bead bracelet and my beads, and I felt pretty lucky. The beads and my bead bracelet turned out to be the most excellent gift I ever got.
