Link building is an important element of any Internet marketing campaign. Your website’s ultimate position in the search engines will come from the quality of your backlinks. Bottom line is you won’t be able to capture targeted search engine traffic if you don’t have many relevant backlinks. But the desire to get the best links, marketers often make costly mistakes with backlinks. These mistakes may not seem like much, but the effects they have on your business can be serious. If you have any desire to have a great relationship with the search engines, then you’ll want to be aware of and avoid the following mistakes.

One of the common mistakes made by webmasters is that they opt for an image link, when it’s completely possible to have a text link with their targeted keyword. Many marketers find themselves with problems because they’re rushing for fast results. Anchor text link mistakes are common. A text link with your relevant keywords/phrases is a better choice, even though an image link can possibly get you more traffic. There’s a common misperception that an image link is always preferred over text links. You can get much more targeted traffic because you can get ranked better from your keywords. Search engines, especially Google, give great emphasis to keywords that appear in the anchor text. An image link is fine but only if it’s the only choice.

The next mistake is buying good backlinks, but the anchor text is not appropriate to you. It doesn’t make a big difference to your link popularity when you get links from high page rank pages, but the anchor text is useless and has something like “Click here!” in it. Be sure to only use relevant keywords in your link text.

If you get a backlink and it doesn’t have your keyword in the anchor text, the search engines would rank it for the wrong keywords, which can get you a penalty too. There are many marketers who assume that what matters is the link and not the anchor text, which isn’t right. Your keywords in your anchor text will have an impact on your rankings, as well. The thing to do is research your keywords, decide what you want to rank for, and then use those keywords in your anchor text.

In conclusion, if your link building efforts are genuine and you’re able to avoid the above mistakes, then you will see great results on the long run. Your search engine rankings will begin to improve as you begin to attract more quality backlinks.
